Health and Well-being Viewpoints from the professionals’ perspectives

Monday, July 27th, 2009

I recently interviewed several colleagues regarding the benefits of massage therapy and other integrative modalities.  This brief description was provided by Tamara Hayes, Newport Beach, CA:

What is massage?
There are many purposes for massage – stress management, medical massage, prevention of disease, which is quite in depth. Overall, massage is essential to our well-being.

Massage is a healing technique by which a therapist treats sore, tense, inflamed muscles with a series of compression and circulatory movements. This increases the blood flow which allows the body to become “unstuck” and reconnected. The same treatment, but applied more gently, is used with connective tissues or areas of localized pain. More like gentle kneading and fanning type circular movements, this procedure helps the body move things along and reconnect naturally. Massage is very energizing, very healthy and great method for detoxifying. Therefore, it is important to remember to drink plenty of water after treatments.

As a massage therapist, I try to help the body do what it does naturally. The body is the genius; my job is to support its natural function. This process seems to “bless the human spirit”. I see it every time.

Last chance for Amalfi Retreat!

View of Divine Coast from enchanting RavelloCome with us to the Amalfi Coast for a trip of a lifetime!   Breathtaking Ravello awaits you!

Ravello, perched on a verdant “balcony” overlooking the Amalfi Coast, is truly the gem of the Divine Coast.

Our mind, body and spirit journey includes practicing yoga in the magical gardens and pilates, nutrition classes and kick-boxing classes.   We indulge in leisurely cruises along the coast , hike to local villages, walking along centuries old paths sprinkled with Roman ruins.  We enjoy citrus scrubs, open air massages and  aromotherapy treatments at the spa.

We feed our souls attending evening concerts, enrich our minds learning about the architecture, art and history of the Amalfi Coast.

We relish fabulous regional food cuisine, explore charming medieval streets showcasing typical ceramic arts, linens and coral creations, linger in the piazzas sipping espresso or limoncello, and immerse ourselves in the culture.

Join La Dolce Vita Retreats in Ravello September 20-26, 2009!  Only a few spots remain so register now!

When was the last time you enjoyed a vacation in which the main focus was taking care of you and nurturing your whole being?  A vacation in the truest sense is one that enables you to return home feeling totally rested and replenished, perhaps even a little indulged.  Have you had one lately? Was it years or months ago?  Was it a journey of enrichment?

As women, we are always caring for others – our husbands, children, parents, and friends – but rarely do we nurture ourselves.  We take marvelous vacations with our families and friends that become cherished memories and fill countless albums, but more often than not, we return exhausted and sapped.  We have spent the vacation tending to everyone’s needs to insure that their experience is wonderful.

After years of that vacation model, I realized that I coveted one week a year for myself, a week in an absolutely idyllic location with the finest amenities and a mind, body spirit program.  I wanted to rest and relax but also exercise.  I wanted to learn some new hobbies or rediscover old ones.  I wanted to hear about topics from professionals that directly related to my well being and be able to discuss these topics with other women.  I wanted a top-notch women’s getaway with all of the above and more, but I couldn’t find what I envisioned.  I began surveying my friends and discovered I was not alone in my yearning.  More and more agreed it was exactly what each of us needed and deserved and so, La Dolce Vita Retreats was born!
