The Benefits of Women’s Retreats A-Z: The “D”s by Janice Briggs

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Well, I guess I should start this list off with the obvious – one week of “Dolce Vita”!

But what is “dolce vita” beyond the translation of “sweet life”?  What does it mean to you?

If you could be anywhere of your choosing, in any circumstances,  would it change who you are?

Have you contemplated your understanding of “dolce vita”?  Translated into your words, what is dolce vita to you? Are you living it or is it just an elusive yearning?

The reality is that we create our ”dolce vita”, and once we do, it  goes everywhere with us and we find it everywhere!  It is within.

Here are a few things dolce vita means to me that begin with “D”:

dolce vita – in awe of  life

discovery of Self  and what brings meaning to life

deliberate, mindful living – savouring the moment

delicious everything

diversity and acceptance

daily gratitude journaling

daily yoga

daily meditation

develop mastery of something with a humble heart

delight in our world

Divine presence

Deia, Mallorca

“divine coast” of Amalfi

Dare to imagine to live a large life as part of the universe, rather than of our own  microcosm.

dream

Blessings,

Janice

The Benefits of Women’s Retreats A-Z; the “Cs”

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I love writing about the benefits of women’s retreats because it always brings me back to why I started La Dolce Vita Retreats.   Recounting the benefits is like meditation for me in that it brings my focus back to the values about which I am most passionate.  I have what’s commonly referred to as a ”monkey” mind, my biggest challenge being the ability to clear my mind of the mind chatter.  It’s why yoga and meditation are such an essential part of my life.  When I do my asana practice, I think of nothing other than my yoga.  It’s pure bliss.

Today I get to write about the benefits of women’s retreats that start with the letter “C”.  I say ” I get to write” because I feel so blessed to be able to write from my heart about things I have experienced and had the good fortune of sharing with others.  It’s often a mad world and so I’ll start with calm as being the first benefit!

The “C”s:

calm – in my mind, body  and soul

Chianti – both region and wines

camaraderie – of women supporting each other

clarity of purpose – in life and legacy

conscious and subconscious – inner voice, inner peace

celebration of NOW

creativity and self-discovery

cultivate new ideas

cherish ourselves

cosmopolitan as well as rural

countryside stretching for miles, tiny ancient villages dotting the coast

connect to a higher power

choices rather than consequences

create the life you love

communicate your thoughts and needs, and listen to those of others

collect memories

compassion for all living things

compass for your soul

child-like spirit reborn

Just a few of the “C”s.   Please email me with more to add to this collection at janicebriggs@ladolcevitaretreats.com

Namaste,

Janice

Women’s Retreats: More Than Just a Quick Fix by Janice Briggs

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I have learned the hard way that our greatest asset is our wellbeing and yet, often it’s receives the least of our attention and investment, if any at all. Being overstressed, overwhelmed, short on time, sleep deprived as we navigate our lives and various roles, leaves us physically depleted as well as emotionally and spiritually compromised.

Does this sound a little bit like you? Are you running on empty? Do you feel like you’ve lost touch with what is most meaningful to you? When was the last time you actually had time to write in your journal, read an entire book sitting under a tree, or just take a nap sans alarm clock? Or the last time you put the world “on pause” to replenish your resources. When was the last time you stopped long enough to rebalance your life, to synchronize your mind, body and spirit so that each part of your being is sufficiently fulfilled.

Women’s retreats are healing and learning respites. They help you to re-establish your “well spirit”, to reconnect with your child-like spirit, your creative spirit, your self-caring spirit, to restore your wellbeing. It is a time for you to feed your mind, body and soul, rescue them from “starvation”.

In today’s world, women hold a plethora of responsibilities from being mothers, wives and caregivers to entrepreneurs, career professionals, community leaders and more. Often times because we wear so many hats, we forget our true essence, our essential and authentic self. Particularly, we forget the simple things we enjoy doing and that bring joy to our spirits -for example, painting, reading, gardening, napping. Perhaps it’s walking, hiking or biking without a schedule, 3 hour lunches, sleeping late or just floating in the sea – the things we are always putting off for later.

A retreat allows you the luxury of getting back in touch with yourself. It provides a nurturing enviroment for self-renewal and replenishment, to awaken your spirit and open your mind to new ideas and possibilities. It’s a time to celebrate you, to return to nature and its healing benefits.

Your wellbeing is your most valuable asset. Invest in yourself – in your physical health, your personal growth, in balancing your life. Love yourself. Take care of you! All of you – mind, body and spirit.

“The concept for La Dolce Vita Retreats evolved about a decade ago, at a time of reflection and transition in my life. I pondered those relationships and experiences that were of utmost importance to me and that brought pristine joy to my life. I embarked on a self-exploratory journey in which I determined what most fulfilled me. I noted, on a single sheet of paper, those values I most cherished and was not willing to forego. I also documented all of life’s enriching opportunities to which I had aspired but, for various reasons, had not accomplished. I still preserve that sheet of paper, as a testament to what each of us can achieve if only we maintain the confidence and courage to pursue our dreams.

“I realized that I had the capacity within me to create the life I wanted to live. I envisioned a life that embraced my passions and my values. I set my goals. With the support of the women in my life, my dearest friends through “thick and thin,” I envisioned a place where the camaraderie of women could be celebrated and nourished. Hence, La Dolce Vita Retreats was born — the fulfillment of my dream, one I wish to share with you so that you can ponder yours.”

Getting in sync with a women’s retreat!

One of the things I love about planning women’s retreats is that the planning process helps me stay on track of my values.

Have you ever noticed that one never seems to finish the daily ”list”?  So many things to accomplish, so little time?  I often have to stop myself in my tracks to appreciate that my time is the most valuable thing I have and I can chose where to “spend” it.

As I made a mental list of to do’s this morning, I actually considered re-scheduling a lunch date with a friend I haven’t seen in over a year.  Can you imagine?  I started calculating the hour of travel each way and the time for lunch, and then I realized that having lunch with my friend, catching up on our lives, was not only more important than picking up the flowers, washing the car and dropping off the laundry, it was food for my soul.  Those other duties can wait.!

Female friendship is a cherished priority or mine and the basis for La Dolce Vita Retreats.  Sharing our struggles and joys with another woman, who in this caseis also a business owner,  is important to each of our realities. “Checking in” with another human being helps us continue to grow as human beings, enriches our lives.

I work out of my home by choice.  I like being able to work in my pajamas or take my walks or practice yoga on my schedule.  I like being in a quiet and homey environment.  But it can be quite isolating if one is not careful.  Staying in touch with the outside world is critical.

Like everything else we do, we must “use” it or “lose” it.  We must nurture our friendships and not take them for granted.

So, the next time you think about calling a friend or visiting a friend, before putting it off for another time, think about what it is that you “must” do that is so much more important.  Oftentimes, upon reflection, it really isn’t.

So… into the shower I go to get ready for my lunch plans with my friend!  I’ll probably have to work late tonight but it will definitely be worth it!  I am grateful to be able to visit with my friend.  Most of all, I am grateful for my friends.

Blessings,

Janice
